Death warrants for Salahuddin, Mujahid
Dhaka: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday issued death warrants for war crime convicts Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammed Mujahid.
A three-member bench led by Justice Anwarul Haque issued the warrants at about 1:45pm. The other members of the bench are Justice Shahinur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Suhrawardy.
Tribunal’s registrar Shahidul Islam Jhinuk said the tribunal will send the death warrants to jail authorities, home secretary, law secretary, and deputy commissioner of Dhaka district.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court released the full verdicts of the appeals filed by Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid paving way for their execution.
Supreme Court’s additional registrar Sabbir Foez said the full judgments would be sent to the International Crimes Tribunal, which in its turn will issue death warrant for the condemned convicts.
BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury was sentenced to death by ICT-1 as it on 1 October 2013 found him guilty of nine out of twenty three charges of crimes against humanity and genocide committed in 1971.
Later on 29 October of the same year Salauddin appealed to the SC challenging the tribunal verdict.
On 29 July this year the apex court upheld ICT 1 verdict of death penalty to Salauddin.
Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid was founf guilty of five out of seven charges brought against him by the ICT 2 on 17 July 2013.
Mujahid on 12 August filed the appeal with the SC in the same year challenging the verdict.
But, on 16 July this year the Appellate Division of the SC upheld death penalty for Mujahid.
