Dhaka: A University Grant Commission (UGC) official, Omar Siraj, who was held for his alleged involvement in medical entrance test question paper leak, was died in Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) custody early on Friday.

RAB 4 officials said Omar was taken to National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute after he had chest pain on Thursday night.

The UGC assistant director, Omar, died at the hospital at about 12:00am on Friday, said RAB members.

Later, his body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Earlier, on 18 September, police held three persons including Omar during a raid at UGC headquarter in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area for their alleged involvement in medical entrance test question paper leak.

Later, on 24 September, the case was shifted to RAB after concluding questioning them for two days.

RAB 4 took Omar Siraj on two-day custody for quizzing.

However, Omar’s brother claimed the death as a planned murder.

The combined entrance tests for the medical and dental college MBBS-BDS courses for the 2015-16 academic session was held across the country on 18 September.

According to the Health Ministry, there are 9212 seats in the 95 government and private medical colleges while 1887 seats in dental colleges.
A total of 84,784 admission seekers have appeared in the examination.
