Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)  on Saturday demanded the arrest of Manzurul Islam Liton, a ruling party MP from Gaibandha-1 constituency, for allegedly firing shots on a minor boy leaving him wounded in Gaibandha on Friday.

The party alleged that the members of law enforcement agencies have turned out to be helpless in ensuring the rule of law in the country for lack of good governance.

‘We want to state with a grave concern that the ruling party has turned Bangladesh into a safe haven of terrorism. People now feel insecure both at home and outside. Common people and even children are being regularly falling victims to terrorism unleashed by ruling party cadres and MPs elected without people’s votes,’ said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.

Speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he further said, ‘An MP elected without votes wounded a child in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila by firing shots on him like hunting a bird on early Friday. Our party demands immediate arrest of MP Manzurul Islam Liton.’

Ripon also strongly protested and condemned the killing of Shah Alam, a BNP activist of Katabari union under Gobindaganj in Gaibandha on Thursday night.

‘The country’s people have got anxious due to the criminal activities, tender manipulation and land grabbing by ruling party men.’

A 10-year-old boy Sourav Mian, son of Saju Mian of Gopalcharan, was injured with stray bullets allegedly fired by local MP Manjurul Islam Liton at Gopalcharan village in Sundarganj upazila on early Friday.

The BNP spokesman also denounced the killing of a Japanese national in Rangpur’s Kaunia upazila on Saturday morning and demanded immediate arrest of the assailants and their punishment.

‘It’s a matter of grave concern as two foreigners were murdered in last few days. The country’s law and order situation marked a sharp slide due to the despotic rule of the current regime,’ he observed.

Barely a week into the killing of an Italian national in capital Dhaka, a Japanese national, Hoshi Kunio, 55, was gunned down by unknown miscreants at about 10:00am.
