Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Monday sent cricketer Shahadat Hossain to jail in a case over torturing his domestic help Mahfuza Akhter Happy.

Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate Yusuf Hossain sent Shahadat to jail after rejecting a bail petition in a hearing.

On Monday morning, the pacer surrendered before the court and submitted a bail petition via his counsel Kazi Nazibullah Hiru.

Earlier, court also rejected the bail petition and custody prayer of Shahadat’s wife Jesmin Jahan Nritto on Sunday.

Mirpur police inspector Shafiqur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, sought five days for questioning Nritto.

Dhaka metropolitan megistrate Mohammad Yunus Khan sent Nritto to jail after rejecting her bail plea and ordered to quiz Nritto at the jail gate.

Police arrested Nritto at about 3:30am on Saturday from Malibagh over allegations of beating and torturing their housemaid.

On 6 September, local people rescued an 11-year-old girl, named Mahfuza Akhter Happy, bearing marks of torture in different parts of her body on a road in Journalist Residential Area in Pallabi of Dhaka.

She claimed that she used to work at cricketer Shahadat’s home, but fled from there after she was tortured by his family members.

On 7 September, a case was filed against Shahadat Hossain and his wife Nritto Shahadat over torturing their housemaid.

Later, it could be confirmed that a girl had gone missing from Shahadat’s house. Mirpur Model Police assistant sub-inspector Salam said the national team cricketer had lodged a general diary on Sunday about his domestic help going missing.

A journalist named Mozammel Hossain filed the case with Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000.

Shahadat, who played 38 Tests and 51 one-day internationals for Bangladesh, missed out on the recent series against India and South Africa after twisting his ankle during a Test match against Pakistan in May.

The 29-year-old paceman was suspended last month when police raided his house after officers found the injured and crying maid on a street in the capital Dhaka.
