Govt to brief diplomats on security situation on Tuesday
Dhaka: The government will brief diplomats about the current situation and security measures on Tuesday to defuse tensions among foreign nationals living in Bangladesh, as the killings of foreign nationals eroded their confidence in personal safety while in Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will jointly brief the diplomats, said an official at the Foreign Ministry.
Both the Ministers will describe additional security measures taken for foreign nationals, and progress in the investigations into the killings of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella and Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi in Dhaka and Rangpur respectively.
However, the diplomats themselves are likely to sit together any time before the briefing to review the overall situation in Bangladesh, said a diplomatic source.
Earlier, Japan's top government spokesman expressed outrage on Monday over the killing of Hoshi, who was shot to death by unidentified assailants in Rangpur on Saturday, reports AP.
The Bangladesh government rejected a statement by the Islamic State group claiming responsibility for the attack.
‘Such a dastardly act should never be repeated. I feel outraged with such an act,’ Yoshihide Suga, Japan's chief cabinet secretary was quoted as saying in the AP report.
Earlier at a function, US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat said their travel advisory does not instruct US citizens not to come to Bangladesh or those already here to leave.
‘Our advisory said please exercise caution. We shared that information with our citizens not to create panic but to act cautiously,’ she said in a meeting with diplomatic correspondents at the National Press Club.
