Chittagong: A detained Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader was reportedly killed in a grenade blast in the Oxygen area of Chittagong early on Tuesday.

Police said JMB military branch chief Javed alias Taufiqul Islam was killed during an arms search operation at a residence in Kuaish link road at about 4:00am.

Detective Branch (DB) sub-inspector Mohammad Ilias said Javed was critically injured as he brought a grenade from a room to hand over it to police.

Later he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

CMCH police post sub-inspector said Javed’s body was burnt from his throat to chest during the bomb blast.

DB officials said Javed and his associate, Kajal, were detained from Oxygen area on Monday afternoon.

Later, after gleaning information from Javed, police conducted an operation at Lal Mia Tower in Kowaznagar of Azimpara and held three other JMB members, Fuad, Mahabub, and Sujan.

DB also recovered nine grenades, a firearm, 120 bullets, 10 sharp weapons, and bomb-making materials during the raid.
