UK updates its travel alert fearing fresh attacks
Dhaka: Despite having the tight security measures in place, the United Kingdom on Friday updated its travel alert for its nationals in Bangladesh saying further attacks targeting westerners may occur.
‘There is a high threat from terrorism. Further attacks targeting westerners may occur,’ it said.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the recent murders of two foreign nationals, the advisory said.
It mentioned further attacks targeting westerners may occur and could be indiscriminate.
‘You should be particularly vigilant, consider your movements carefully and take appropriate security precautions. Keep a low profile in all public spaces and limit your attendance at events where westerners may gather, for example in hotels or conference centres.’
On the evening of 28 September, an Italian citizen was shot and killed at Road 90 of the Gulshan diplomatic zone in Dhaka.
On the morning of 3 October a Japanese citizen was shot and killed in Rangpur district, in Northern Bangladesh. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has claimed responsibility for both murders, it said.
There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. ‘You should be vigilant at this time.’
Earlier, the government arranged additional security measures for around 224000 foreign nationals in Bangladesh.
The diplomats in a meeting with Foreign and Home Ministers expressed satisfaction over the extra security measures.
However, some embassies in Dhaka kept postponing their events in city and other parts of the country.
