2 held over Khijir Khan murder
Dhaka: Detective Branch (DB) in separate drives have arrested two individuals, including an ex-member of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), in connection with the murder of ex-PDB chairman Khijir Khan.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner (media wing) Muntasirul Islam said the arrestees were identified as Tarekul alias Mithu, who was picked up from Tangail and Alek Bepary, who law enforcers caught during a separate drive in Mirpur.
Two cameras and two laptops, presumably stolen, were also recovered from Mithu.
DB officials said that Tarekul had deep roots within banned JMB.
Not only was he an organiser for the group at its peak, he was a member of its Suicide Squad and directly involved in the 17 August, 2005 near-simultaneous explosions that shook the entire country - going off in 63 out of 64 districts.
In the aftermath of the crime, he was arrested and put in jail. He was released in 2010 after serving a 5-year sentence.
