Biometric SIM registration launched
Dhaka: The experimental run of Biometric registration system for mobile phone SIM cards launched on Wednesday by Prime minister’s ICT affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy inaugurated the process by putting his thumb into a biometric register and bought a Teletalk SIM card during the ceremony at about 11:00am at post and telecommunications division of the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The original SIM registration with biometric identification will begin on 16 December 2015.
Prime minister’s ICT affair adviser, while addressing the officials of post and telecommunications division, said, ‘Bangladesh is the second country which is using the biometric verification system for SIM card registration.’
State minister of Post and telecommunication Tarana Halim said termed the biometric system as a ‘progress on the national security sector’.
She said mobile-phone users cannot buy SIM without running their thumbs across the biometric system from 16 December.
It will help to identify people easily, said Tarana Halim.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the state minister talked about different sides of the biometric verification system in a press conference.
