Sylhet: Dismissing the ruling party leaders' remarks that BNP faces splits, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said their party is 'united and getting stronger'.

‘There's no spilt in BNP. Our party is united.’ he said.

Talking to reporters at a hotel in Sylhet, the BNP acting secretary general also claimed that their party vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury's resignation will not harm the party.

A day after announcement of quitting BNP by Mobin, a man of Sylhet, Fakhrul came here for what his party leaders said offering fateha at the two shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (Ra) and Hazrat Shah Paran (Ra).

On Thursday, Mobin, a 67-year old former foreign secretary, announced his retirement from politics resigning from BNP's all the posts on health ground.

In their reaction to the BNP leader's resignation, senior AL leaders said the out-of-parliament opposition party has started facing splits with Mobin's departure.

Fakhrul along with his wife Rahat Ara Begum went to Sylhet from Dhaka in a domestic flight of a private airliner at about 12:40pm.

After offering fateha at the two shrines, he talked to the local journalists at the hotel.

Fakhrul said Mobin did not resign as he went on retirement from politics on health ground. ‘He (Mobin) wanted to get relived of the party's posts as he's sick. The BNP chairperson will decide the matter on her return.’

As his attention was drawn to Mobin's comment that he is in doubt about how much BNP is now following the ideals of its founder Ziaur Rahman, the BNP acting secretary general said it was his personal observation. ‘BNP has not deviated from Zia's ideals and the party is being run following his thoughts.’

Asked whether he thinks BNP will face any problem with Mobin's resignation, Fakhrul said, ‘BNP is a big party which ruled the country thrice. It has won the hearts of people through its activities over the last 35 years. Departure of an individual won't affect the party.’

He also said their party has been facing various adverse situations and plots over the last 35 years, but it is still united and getting stronger gradually.

The BNP leader also termed baseless the ruling party's allegation that BNP has involvement with the recent killings of two foreigners, saying their party does not do the politics of militancy and killing.

He alleged that the government is trying to implicate BNP leaders in the murders of the foreign nationals without any investigation.
