Sylhet: Ruling Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, also Minister for Public Administration, has said that Bangladesh Nationalist Party has become instable and many of its leaders are going to quit it following Shamsher Mubin Chowdhury’s resignation.

Syed Ashraf returned home from the United Kingdom on Saturday.

He reached Sylhet MAG Osmani Airport en route to Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on a flight from London at about 10:20am. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Public Administration affairs HT Imam accompanied him.

After a brief stay for nearly one hour at Osmani Airport, Syed Ashraful Islam left Sylhet for Dhaka Shahjalal Airport at about 11:10am. During his brief stay, leaders of Sylhet District Awami League (AL) made a courtesy call on Syed Ashraful Islam at Osmani Airport.

Briefing waiting reporters on the topic of their discussion at Osmani Airport, general secretary of Sylhet City Awami League Asaduddin Ahmed quoted Syed Ashraful Islam as saying: ‘A sense of unrest is now prevailing in BNP and a psychological war is also going on now between Khaleda-Tarique and many BNP stalwarts. For this reason, Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury resigned from the party. Many more BNP leaders can tender their resignation too.’

District AL general secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury quoted Syed Ashraful Islam as saying: ‘Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury resigned from BNP as a distance has already been created between him and Khaleda-Tarique. He (Syed Ashraf) termed the recent killing of two foreigners as a conspiracy against the state. He also instructed party leaders and workers to remain vigilant in facing the conspiracy.’

Central AL organising secretary Advocate Mizbahuddin Siraj, Sylhet City unit president Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, acting president of district unit Lutfur Rahman, vice-president Ashfaq Ahmed and district Awami Juba League convener Alam Khan Mukti were present, among others, at the courtesy call on with AL general secretary.
