Dhaka: BNP on Tuesday voiced deep concern over the health condition of its ailing acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as he was sent to jail following his surrender before a lower court.

‘Mirza Fakhrul has long been in a vulnerable condition for his illness. As a law-abiding citizen, he surrendered before the court and sought bail following the apex court's order. We've become very worried over his health fragility as the court sent our leader to jail rejecting his bail prayers,’ said party spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.

Speaking at a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he hoped that the court will reconsider Fakhrul's health condition on humanitarian ground and grant him bail allowing him to lead a healthy life.

Earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Maruf Hossain sent the BNP acting secretary general to jail rejecting his bail prayers in three criminal cases filed with the Paltan Police Station.

The court, however, asked the jail authorities to ensure Fakhrul's medical treatment as his lawyers told the court that he has been suffering from various diseases.

Earlier, arrested on 6 January by plainclothes police in front of the Jatiya Press Club, the BNP leader had been released from jail on bail on 14 July on health grounds.

After being released from jail six months after his arrest, the BNP acting secretary general received medical treatment in Singapore and the US for nearly two months.

He is also scheduled to go to Singapore on 24 November for treatment, Ripon told the briefing.

The BNP spokesman said Fakhrul is now seriously ill as he is suffering from variously critical diseases, including that of heart and blockage in the nerve of neck. ‘Under the circumstances, if our leader's health condition deteriorates sharply and any untoward incident happens, the government will be held responsible for that.’

The government should do politics with the opposition in a democratic manner, Ripon said adding it is an inhuman act to push someone to death only for political vengeance. ‘We call upon the government to back off such inhuman practice.’

The BNP leaders alleged that the government is considering the opposition and its leaders' enemies without any reason and trying to annihilate them.

He demanded the government immediately release Fakhrul and other detained leaders.
