Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior leader Abdullah Al Noman on Thursday said people no longer seek trial for any criminal incident in the country as they have lost faith in the current government.

‘The entire nation is now under immense repression. We’ve seen the reactions of the victims’ relatives, including Dipan’s father and Avijit’s wife, and even common people to the recent murders - that they don’t seek trial of the incidents. It has demonstrated people’s complete no-confidence in the government,’ he said.

Speaking at a discussion, he said people cannot keep their confidence in the government as now ‘the protectors have turned predators.’

Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP-platform, arranged the programme at National Press Club on the occasion of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day to be observed on Saturday Noman said people are fed up with the current regime for its repressive acts and misrule.

Voicing deep concern over the growing incidents of attacks on bloggers, publishers and police, he said not police action, but the unity of social forces can help get rid of the current situation.

The BNP leader urged the government to restore democracy to garner a national unity to overcome the crisis.

Speaking at the programme, former Dhaka University vice-chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed said a serious sense of uncertainty has grasped the nation, that any bad incident can happen any time.

‘All the country’s institutions, including educational and social ones, have become divided into two groups,’ he observed.

Emajuddin said a strong unity among the entire nation is now crucial to overcome the current crisis.

He alleged that the government is arresting opposition leaders and activists without any reason. ‘It’s unprecedented in the history.’

The former DU-VC said the government’s plan to hold elections keeping BNP leaders and activists behind bars and unleashing torture on them will turn into a farce and it will not be accepted by anyone.
