Bodyguard of lawmaker Rana held
Tangail: Detectives arrested the bodyguard of Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, Awami League lawmaker from Tangail 3, from the district town early on Thursday for his alleged involvement in killing freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed, reports local media.
The arrestee is Mohammad Samir, resident of Bishwas Betka area of the town.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) launched a drive in Bishwas Betka area on Wednesday midnight and arrested him, officer-in-charge of the DB Golam Mahfizur Rahman said.
Meanwhile, the DB team filed a petition seeking a seven-day remand for Samir after he was produced before the chief judicial magistrate court on Thursday afternoon. The court will hear the petition on Sunday.
Arrested by DB police in August in 2014 in the case, two people—Mohammad Ali and Anisul Islam Raja—made confessional statement over their involvement in the killing to a court under section 164.
They also mentioned the involvement of AL lawmaker Rana, his bodyguard Samir and Rana’s three brothers—Tangail Municipality Mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, Tangail Chambers and Commerce Industry President Jahidur Rahman Kakon and former vice-president of central Chhatra League Saniyat Khan Bappa—in the killing.
Faruk, also a former publicity secretary of AL district unit, was shot dead near his collegepara residence in Tangail town on 18 January, 2013.
Later, Faruk’s wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case with Tangail Model Police Station against unidentified criminals.
