95 BNP, Jamaat-Shibir men among 345 held in 7 districts

Dhaka: Law enforcers in separate drives from Friday night to Saturday night arrested 345 people, including 95 BNP and Jamaat-Shibir activists, on different charges from Chandpur, Bandarban, Satkhira, Jhenidah, Chittagong, Chuadanga and Moulvibazar districts.

In comilla, police in a drive arrested a councillor of Comilla City Corporation (CCC) from Vatpara area of the city on Saturday night.

The arrestee was identified as Quazi Golam Kibria, councillor of ward no one of CCC. Kibria is also the secretary of Comilla City North unit of Jamaat-backed Labourer Welfare Federation.

Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-charge of Kotoali Model Police Station M Abdur Rab said Kibria was wanted in several cases.

In Chandpur, police in several drives arrested six Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists from different parts of the districts.

Officer-in-charge of Shaharasti Model Police Station Mizanur Rahman said police in a drive arrested Shaharasti upazila vice-chairman Mawlana Abul Hossain, who is also the ameer of Jamaat’s Shaharasti unit, on Friday night.

Later, the law enforcers also arrested 5 more Jamaat men from Shaharasti Kachua, Hajiganj and Sadar upazilas in separate drives.

In Bandarban, police members arrested district unit ameer of Jamaat Mawlana Abdus Salam from his home in the town on Saturday noon.

Officer-in-charge of Bandarban Sadar Police Station M Rafiqullah said they arrested Abdus Salam allegedly for planning to carry out subversive activities.

In satkhira, the law enforcers in separate drives arrested 31 people, including 13 leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir, from different parts of the district.

The drive was conducted from Friday night till Saturday morning.

Enamul Haque, sub-inspector of the Special Branch (SB) of police, said a team of joint forces conducted separate drives in the district and arrested 10 people from Sadar upazila, four from Kalaroa, three from Tala, two from Kaliganj, four from Ashashuni, three from Debhata and Shyamnagar upazilas, and two from Patkelghata upazila.

In Jhenidah, police arrested 11 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat, from different places of the district from Friday night to Saturday morning.

Additional superintendent of police Azbahar Ali Sheikh said police conducted separate drives in six upazilas of the district and arrested 11 people on various charges.

Among the arrestees, Azizur Rahman, ameer of Kotchandpur upazila unit of Jamaat, was arrested along with four crude bombs.

Police said the BNP and Jamaat men were arrested over charges of subversive activities.

In Chittagong, law enforcers in separate drives arrested 282 people, including 50 Jamaat-Shibir activists, from Satkania and Lohagora upazila early Saturday.

Khandaker Farid Uddin, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station, said a special team of the district police conducted the drive in the morning and arrested 15 Jamaat activists and 24 Shibir activists from different places of the upazila.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Shahjahan, officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station, said police arrested 11 Shibir activists from the upazila.

Mohammad Naimul Hasan, additional superintendent of police (SB), said police in separate drives arrested 45 accused in different cases and 187 fugitives.

In Chuadanga, police arrested 12 BNP-Jamaat leaders and activist from separate places of four upazilas of district on sabotage charges.

Belayet Hossain, additional superintendent of police, said different teams of police conducted drives from Friday night to Saturday morning and arrested one from Sadar upazila, three from Damurhuda, five from Jibonnagar upazila and three from Alamdanga upazila.

In Moulvibazar, Police in a drive arrested a leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir from Kamalganj upazila headquarters on early Saturday.

The arrestee was identified as Andul Hye, 26, Shibir president of Kamalganj upazila unit and son of Abdul Hamid, resident of Balapara village of the upazila.

Kamal Hossain, sub-inspector of Kamalganj Police Station, said a team of police conducted a drive in the upazila headquaters early in the morning and arrested him along with Zihadi books.

A case was filed in this connection.
