US to continue support for better future of Bangladesh: Bernicat
Dhaka: US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat on Tuesday said her country will continue to walk along with Bangladesh for a better future with an impressive economic growth and stability facing the challenge of violent extremism.
‘The US will continue to walk side by side with Bangladesh on its path to a better future, a future of impressive economic growth in an environment of stability,’ she said after her meeting with Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon at the Secretariat.
The Ambassador said they reviewed how Bangladesh, like so many countries, including the United States, faces the ‘challenge of violent extremism,’ according to the US Embassy here.
Ambassador Bernicat conveyed to Minister Menon the US’ continued support for the Minister’s efforts to enhance aviation security and her appreciation for the steps the government of Bangladesh has taken to improve the overall security of foreigners.
Besides, she underscored that a strong US-Bangladesh relationship benefits the United States and the American people, Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi people, and promotes regional and global security.
At the meeting, the US diplomat expressed satisfaction over the security measures taken by the government for foreigners in Bangladesh, said a press release of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry.
Meanwhile, the minister said, the government is determined to provide safety for its nationals and foreigners.
Menon said the US government did not issue travel advisory for its nationals when the opposition parties carried out unprecedented mayhem countrywide in 2014 and beginning of 2015.
Travel advisory was only issued on 5 January 2014 on the election-day but now security alert is being issued continuously centering very few isolated incidents, the release added.
The issue of giving the category 1 status for the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport will be discussed in the next Ticfa meeting, said the US Ambassador when the minister raised the issue.
