Jamaat calls hartal for Thursday
Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami calls a county-wide hartal on Thursday protesting Supreme Court’s order that upheld death penalty of its secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed on Wednesday.
A press release issued by the party’s acting Amir Mokbul Ahmad in its website that the shutdown will be enforced as the Supreme Court upheld Mojaheed’s death penalty rejecting his review plea against the death sentence awarded by International Crimes Tribunal for his wartime offences.
Earlier, on Wednesday the apex court upheld its previous verdicts on BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujaheed rejecting their pleas for reviewing the court’s previous order for the death penalties for their crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the final appeals of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury clears the way for them to be hanged as early as next week if the president does not grant them clemency, reports AFP.
