Jamaat shutdown peaceful in Dhaka
Dhaka: A 12-hour country-wide shutdown enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami across the country protesting the Supreme Court’s judgement that upheld the death penalty to its leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid for his crimes against humanity in 1971, is underway peacefully in the capital with no major untoward incident reported.
No picketing was reported from the country.
The hartal has been called from 6:00am to 6:00am on Thursday.
Jamaat’s acting amir Moqbul Ahmed on Tuesday issued a press release declaring the hartal immediately after the Supreme Court’s verdict for upholding the death penalty of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court appellate division upheld its previous verdict on condemned war criminal Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid after rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty for his crimes against humanity.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed the review petition of the Jamaat secretary general.
Vehicular movement was thin on key streets in compared to normal days. Public vehicles were seen with buses plying on roads in capital city Dhaka.
Most of the shops and establishments were open. Office-goers were seen in their usual routine packing buses and other public vehicles to arrive at their offices.
