6 to die, 4 get life for murder in Comilla, C’nawabganj, Netrakona

Six people were sentenced to death and four others to life imprisonment in Comilla, Chapainawabganj and Netrakona on Tuesday on murder charges.

In Comilla, three people were awarded the capital punishment and four others life imprisonment for killing an expatriate in 2000.

The condemned convicts are Abu Taher alias Saru Miah, Abdus Salam alias Liton, and Jahir Islam Jahir, of Jashpur village in Sadar upazila.

The lifers are Bahar alias Rojen, Mizanur Rahman, Arifuzzaman alias Imon, and Abdul Mannan. The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Tofazzal Hossain, a Saudi expatriate of Jashpur village in Sadar upazila, was stabbed to death by some robbers on October 1, 2000.

A case was filed in this connection the following day.

Police submitted charge sheet against the convicts on February 24, 2004.

After examining the records and 18 witnesses, Judge Chaman Chowdhury of the Additional Session’s Judge Court-4 pronounced the verdict.

In Chapainawabganj, a tribunal convicted two people and sentenced them to death for killing a minor girl after abduction in 2014.

The convicts are Shihab Reza, son of Emran Ali o Ajaipur Aburajpara and Sagar Ahmed, 24, son of Abdul Malek of Shankarbati area in Chapainawabganj municipality area. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each.

According to the prosecution, the convicts kidnapped Kabita Khatun, 4, daughter of Korban Ali of the municipality area, on August 30, 2014 and demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom. Later, they strangulated Kabita to death on the same day.

On September 4, 2014, members of Rab arrested Shihab and Sagar on suspicion of their involvement in the kidnapping and recovered the decomposed body of Kabita following their confessional statement.

After examining the records and witnesses, District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Kabita Khanam passed the verdict acquitting another young man as charges brought against him were not proved.

In Netrakona, a man was sentenced to death for killing his wife in Durgapur upazila in 2007.

The condemned convict was identified as Abdus Salam, 40, son of late Mansur Ali of Dubrajpur village in the Durgapur upazila.

According to the prosecution, Salam hacked his wife Shilpi Akter, to death over a trifling matter at East Nanderchati on October 12, 2007. The couple used to work at a fish enclosure at East Nanderchati.

After examining the records and seven witnesses, Additional Session’s Judge Mohammad Abdul Hamid handed down the verdict.
