Doctors, nurses and authorities concerned are responsible for the deaths of 32 people including 10 babies who died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH) on February 9.

The allegation was disclosed from the report submitted on Tuesday, 13 days after the incident, by the probe committee formed by the hospital authorities for investigating the deaths, said director of the hospital Brigadier General Dr. Abdus Sabir Mia.

According to the report, the deaths were caused by the negligence of doctors, nurses and some authorities concerned, he said.

Besides, the rush of patients during the hartal and blockade programme, mismanagement, manpower shortage and accommodation problems were also held responsible for the deaths, the director added.

On February 9, at least 32 people, including 10 children, died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH) allegedly due to ‘wrong treatment and negligence’.

Among the 32 patients, five were newborn babies, five were children and the remaining 22 were men and women of different ages, according to sources at the hospital.

Families of the deceased had alleged that the deaths were due to negligence and wrong treatment of the doctors.

A four-member probe committee, headed by Ismail Ali Patwari, head of Medicine Department of the hospital, had been formed to investigate the deaths.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has decided to form a three-member probe committee, headed by a joint secretary, to investigate the matter.
