Jamaat to enforce hartal Monday
Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will enforce a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal on Monday protesting what it said the killing of its secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed by hanging him for war crimes.
Jamaat acting president Makbul Ahmad announced the strike soon after Mojaheed was executed at Dhaka Central Jail in the early hours of Sunday, said a local agency.
Earlier, condemned war criminals Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury were hanged at the Dhaka Central Jail in the early hours of Sunday for the atrocities they had committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
The two war criminals were executed after President Abdul Hamid rejected their mercy petitions.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court upheld its previous judgment on Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed and Salauddin Quader, rejecting their pleas for reviewing death penalty awarded to them for their crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Hours after the SC decision, the party had also called a countrywide daylong hartal for Thursday which was observed drawing very poor response.
