Sixth anniversary of BDR carnage on Wednesday
The sixth anniversary of the BDR carnage will be observed on Wednesday across the country, commemorating the atrocious killing of 74 people, including 57 army officials in BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka on 25-26 February 2009.
Top officials from government, BGB, and army, along with the relatives, will pay tribute to the martyrs by placing wreaths at their graves in Banani graveyard on Wednesday.
With the arrangement of Bangladesh Army, representatives of President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Home Affairs junior minister Asaduzzaman Khan, the chiefs of three military services, home ministry’s senior secretary and BGB director General will place wreaths at the grave at around 9 am, according to a BGB statement.
The statement was issued by the Muhammad Mohsin Reza, public relations officer of the paramilitary force.
It also reads that a prayer session will be held will be held at Bir Uttam Fazlur Rahman Khandaker auditorium at Pilkhana BGB headquarters at 4:30 pm on Thursday.
Along with the formal arrangements, special prayers will also be offered in all mosques under BGB and in all region, sector, institution and units of BGB and its BOPs, it reads.
After the BDR mutiny in 2009, which killed 57 army officials, the force was later renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
On 5 November 2013, a Dhaka court announced death penalty to 150 soldiers of the then Bangladesh Rifles and two civilians for their involvement in the carnage. Life imprisonment was announced to 161 others.
In addition, 256 people, mostly from BDR soldiers were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment ranging from 3 to 10 years while 277 accused gets acquittal.
