AL for allowing lawmakers to join electioneering
Dhaka: Awami League on Sunday demanded the Election Commission allow lawmakers to participate in electioneering during the countrywide municipal polls scheduled for 30 December.
A six-member AL delegation, led by its joint organising secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, met the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad at about 12:30pm and demanded that a provision be there in the election code of conduct to pave the path for lawmakers to join the electioneering in the local government body polls.
Emerging from the meeting, Hanif told reporters that they came to the Election Commission to lodge an objection regarding a provision of the election code of conduct that lawmakers will not be allowed to participate in the election campaign.
‘As MPs have no executive power and enjoy government benefits they have constitutional rights to participate in electioneering,’ Hanif said.
Other members of the delegation are Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, Khaled Mahmud Chowdhury, Afzal Hossain and Abdus Sobhan Golap.
