Netrakona: A tribunal on Wednesday sentenced five persons to death for raping a teenage girl in 2002.

The convicts are Shamim, Bikon, Tikon, Taposh and Rup Mia of Purbadhala upazila in Netrakona.

The court also fined them Tk 25,000 each. Among the convicts, Rup Mia was tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, the convicts raped the girl, aged about 15, near Kumarkhali Bridge at Purbadhala on 20 July 2002. She, accompanied by her brother-in-law, was on her way to the village of Satmati.

Her family filed a case against the rapists on the following day.

After examining the records and witnesses, District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge AKM Abul Kashem pronounced the verdict acquitting one, Ekhlas, as allegation brought against him could not be proved.
