Jessore: Two people were killed in reported gunfight with police and rival groups at Rahmatpur and Abhaynagar upazilas in Jessore in the early hours of Wednesday.

An activist of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (ML) was killed in a reported gunfight with his rivals at Ranigati village in Abhaynagar upazila early on Wednesday, reports United News of Bangladesh.

The deceased is Bidyut Kumar Roy, a resident of the village.

The Abhaynagar police said they had information around 2:10am that a gun battle was taking place between two groups of terrorists in the area.

The criminals engaged in gunfight in the area over establishing supremacy in the locality.

A team of police went to the spot and found Bidyut lying in the spot while the terrorists of both the groups managed to flee the scene.

Later, Bidyut died on way to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex at about 3:15am.

The law enforcers also recovered one pipe gun, three bullets and three bullet shells from the spot.

Bidyut was accused in nine cases filed with different police stations, the OC added.

On the other hand, Jessore Detective Branch said a group of robbers were taking preparation for a robbery at Rahmatpur by felling a tree to block the road. The robbers opened fire as police went to the spot on information. Police also fired back which left a robber bullet-hit on the spot. The robbers left the injured one behind and manage to flee from the spot. Later, the injured man died after he was taken to Jessor Medical College Hospital.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The Jessore detective branch sub-inspector Abul Khayer said police recovered a shutter gun, a machete, a saw, and some ropes from the spot.

Three DB members were also injured during the gunfight. They are SI Tofayel Ahmed, Constable Sirajul Islam, and Russel. The injured were taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital for primary treatment and later shifted to Police Hospital.
