12,642 candidates to vie for municipal polls
Dhaka: Returning officers stationed across the country have approved 12,642 nomination papers submitted by candidates and found 863 nomination papers were invalid.
After scrutiny, the returning officers found 961 nomination papers for the post of mayor to be valid, while 135 were found to be irregular.
The equivalent number of councilors is 9,169 and 2,512 for the reserved seats, while 572 nominations papers for the post of councilors and 156 nominators for the reserved category were cancelled.
It was disclosed to newsmen on Monday by Rajib Ahsan, senior assistant secretary of the Election Commission coordination and assistance wing.
The commission deputy secretary Shamsul Alam said that those who were failed to qualify will have the chance to appeal within three days.
After resolution of the appeals, the eligible nominees will have the option withdrawing from the race till 13 December 2015 after that they will entitled led to engaged in electoral campaigns.
Election to the 234 municipalities of the country will be held on 30 December.
This is the first time mayoral election that will be contesting on a party platform.
