CEC assures BNP election to be held ‘as per the law’
Dhaka: Following a meeting with representatives of the BNP, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Tuesday reiterated that the municipal elections would be held as per the law.
‘I’ve assured them (BNP) the election will be held as per the law, and we have asked all election officials and law enforcers to take decisions following the laws,’ he said.
While leaving his Election Secretariat office, the CEC made the remark replying to a question from reporters about his meeting with the BNP delegation.
Earlier in the day, a five-member BNP delegation, led by its standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, met the CEC and urged the Commission to ensure a congenial atmosphere in municipal election areas so that voters can exercise their franchise without facing any obstacle or intimidation.
About BNP’s complaints that many opposition aspirants were obstructed from submitting nomination papers, the CEC said the Commission assisted those who sought the EC’s help for filing nomination papers.
He said the EC has already taken measures against violations of the election code of conduct. They had asked the lawmakers not to participate in election activities and also had the High Court serve show causes to three such lawmakers for their participation in the election activities.
