Recommendations sought to check waterway accidents

Dhaka: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry on Thursday sought recommendations from the Shipping Department to check accidents on waterways.
The parliamentary watchdog came up with the advice for recommendations at its 11th meeting held at the Secretariat with its chairman Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam in the chair.
The Standing Committee asked the Shipping Department to work out recommendations for steps that can be taken to stop accidents on waterways and submit the plan to the committee at its next meeting.
The meeting was also attended by committee members Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and Md Abdul Hye, Md Habibur Rahman, M Abdul Latif and Anwarul Azim.
The committee members prayed for the salvation of the departed souls of those killed in the recent launch capcize in the Padma River at Shibalaya upazila, Manikganj.
At 71 people died as a passenger vessel, ‘MV Mostofa’, sank in the Padma River after it was hit by a cargo vessel on February 22.
