The ruling party Awami League has finalised names of businessman Annisul Huq and former Dhaka mayor Mohammad Hanif’s son Sayeed Khokon as mayor candidates for Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations respectively.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday evening called the two nominees in Ganabhaban and gave them necessary instructions in this regard, confirmed sources. 

Earlier on February 23, Ministry of Local Government sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) requesting it to take necessary steps to hold elections in Dhaka South city and Dhaka North city.

Dhaka City Corporation was bifurcated on 29 November, 2011, through passage of Local Government (City Corporation) (Amended Bill), 2011. Later, Dhaka South City Corporation was established consisting of 36 wards and Dhaka South City Corporation with 56 wards.
