Lakshmipur: Police have arrested five people over the looting of valuables worth Tk 3.5 lakh from a group of students and teachers of Lakshmipur Polytechnic Institute after injuring 10 of them in Brahamanbaria Sadar upazila on early Wednesday.

Police said some 120 students and some teachers of the institution went on an education tour to Sylhet from Lakshmipur in two buses and a microbus on Monday.

While returning to Lakshmipur, a gang of robbers intercepted their microbus near Brahamanbaria police camp.

The bandits looted cash, mobile phone sets and other valuables after making them hostage at gunpoint and beat up 10 students and a few teachers, leaving them injured.

At a stage, students of the two buses, who were behind the microbus, got down from the buses and chased the bandits.

However, the students managed to catch one of the bandits. After giving him a good thrashing, they handed over him to police.

Brahamanbaria Sadar police officer-in-charge Akul Chandra Biswas said police arrested five of the robbers, including one with bullet wounds
