Meherpur: A suspected robber was killed in a lynch-mob attack at Ashrafpur village of Sadar upazila in Meherpur on early Monday.

The deceased is Ejarul Islam, 41, a resident of Bhabanandapur village of the upazila, reports UNB, a local news agency.

Quoting locals, police said a gang of armed robbers numbering 14-15 stormed into the house of Mintu Sheikh of the village breaking the door open at about 2:00am.

The gang looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables from the house.

Hearing the scream of the house inmates, locals rushed to the house and chased the robbers.

The robbers also stabbed Harej, son of Mintu Sheikh and his neighbour Rashid when they tried to catch the robbers.

Later, the angry mob managed to catch Erajul, one of the robbers, and gave him a good thrashing, leaving him critically injured.

Informed, police rescued him and took him to Meherpur General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Sadar police officer-in-charge Ahsan Habib confirmed the incident.

Ejarul was wanted in several cases including for robbery, murder and extortion, the OC added.
