Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the Election Commission must create a proper election environment in the country to make its election roadmap a success.

‘We would like to call upon the Election Commission you please first ensure an election-friendly environment and make a road to election. Otherwise, your roadmap won’t be fruitful, and you (EC) will be held responsible for the failure to hold a fair election,’ he said, reports the UNB.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while speaking at a seminar on BNP’s ‘Vision 2030’ at Nayapaltan Bhasani Bhaban auditorium arranged by BNP’s women wing Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal.

He urged the EC to take steps for arranging an inclusive election as people will not go to polling stations if the January-5, 2014 like unilateral election is held again.

Earlier on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda unveiled a booklet of EC’s roadmap for the next general election. As per the roadmap, the commission will start dialogue with political parties and other stakeholders on July 31 next.

Fakhrul called upon the government to engage in talks with political parties to find out a way for holding a credible election.

He said arranging a fair and credible election through talks is the only way for Awami League to avoid public wrath for its misdeeds, misrule and repressive acts. ‘If the government doesn’t take steps for holding an acceptable and fair election, the country’s people won’t allow them even to flee.’

Fakhrul said Awami League does not want BNP to join the election and a fair election to be held as it knows it very well that the party will not be able to return to power with people’s vote.

Referring to law enforcers alleged intervention in a meeting of some political party leader at Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) President ASM Abdur Rab’s Uttara residence, he said Awami League thinks only it, not any other party, has the right to hold rallies and meetings anywhere in the country. ‘It can’t be a democratic attitude.’

The BNP leader said ruling party men are getting richer by plundering thousands of crores of public money while the poor are becoming poorer gradually.

He called upon all to wake up to force the government to hold a fair and participatory election and restore people’s all rights.
