Chittagong: Five members of a family, including two children, were killed and two others injured in a landslide triggered by incessant rain at Jangal Salimpur in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong early on Friday.

Three of the deceased are as Fatema, wife of Rafiqul, their son Yunus and Rafiqul’s sister Rabeya. They are residents of Noakhali.

Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nazmul Islam Bhuiyan said the incident took place around 3:00am, when a chunk of mud from the hill collapsed on the house of Rafiqul, leaving the five dead and two others injured. They were asleep during the incident.

‘Incessant rains for the last three days caused the landslide,’ the UNO added.

Abdus Sattar Mandal, deputy director of Chittagong Fire Service, said six units of firefighters went to the spot and were carrying out the salvage operation.

According to the meteorologists at Patenga Met office, the met office recorded 174 mm rain in Sitakunda over 24 hours till 6:00pm on Thursday, the highest rainfall recorded in the country. Many low-lying areas have been inundated in the upazila due to the torrential rain on Thursday.

On 13 June, at least 162 people, including four Army men, were killed in landslides in the country’s five southeastern hill districts.

Of them, 118 killed in Rangamati, which was hit hardest by the hillslides, while 34 in Chittagong, six in Bandarban, two each in Cox’s Bazar and Khagrachhari.
