Dhaka: Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Chief Monirul Islam on Sunday said muggers killed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mizanur Ranman Talukder as they came to know his identity.

The CTTC chief came up with the information while briefing reporters at the Police Headquarters after the arrest of Md Shah Alam alias Alam alias Budda from Tongi in connection with the murder.

Detectives arrested Shah Alam on Saturday night.

During primary interrogation, Shah Alam said he along with his three associates -- Mintu, Kamal and Faruk -- took part in the killing.

Quoting Shah Alam, Monirul said Alam along with three associates took position near a mosque in Uttara Sector-3 after Fazr Azan on June 21 in a private car.

When ASP Mizanur came out of the mosque after saying his prayers, they dragged him into their private car.

When the car started moving, he said, driver Zakir played music on high volume and switched off the light. Among them Mintu, who sat in the back seat, hit Mizanur in his head and one of them strangulated him with a piece of cloth when the car reached Uttara Sector-10.

When the car reached near Birulia Bridge in Savar, they dumped the body there, said Monirul.

ASP Mizanur Rahman of Dhaka Highway Police was found dead at Mirpur Beribandh (Embankment) area.

Mizanur, who joined the Bangladesh Police as a sub-inspector in 1988, set out from his Uttara residence after Fazr prayers for his workplace at Savar, police said.

Victim's younger brother Masum Parvez filed a case with Rupnagar Police Station against several unknown miscreants on the same day.
