The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Monday placed a Tk 3337.67 crore budget for the fiscal year 2017-18 with an increased allocation for mosquito control programmes.

DSCC Mayor M Syeed Khokon announced the budget at a meeting at Nagar Bhaban auditorium, outlining 77 percent development budget.

He said the DSCC fixed a target of Tk 1,064.78 crore revenue generation, including realisation of Tk 515 crore arrears as rates and taxes, reports the UNB.

The revenue expenditure in the budget has been fixed at Tk 609.82 in the fiscal year 2017-2018 which was Tk 430.11 crore in the previous fiscal year.

The expenditure in the budget include: Salaries and allowances Tk 250 crore, road and traffic infrastructure maintenance and development Tk 1130.51 crore, physical infrastructure building and development Tk 374.80 crore, power, energy, gas and water Tk 143.50 crore, environmental development Tk 192.56 crore, development of recreational facilities Tk 175.50 crore and development of graveyards and cremation fields Tk 9 crore.

The budget has set aside Tk 30 crore for mosquito control programmes which was Tk 11.50 crore in 2016-2017 fiscal year amid the growing concern over the outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases like Chikungunya and dengue. City councilors were also present.

Talking about Chikungunya, Mayor Khokon thanked the media for their constructive criticisms which helped the corporation control it and said its dominance has weakened significantly. ‘We can only try to control ...it’ll come under full control soon.’

On water-logging problem in city’s Shantinagar area, Mayor said there will be no water-logging in the area once drainage work is completed by August.

The DSCC Mayor also talked about corporation’s success on removing all illegal billboards saying there were over 2,200 illegal billboards.

He claimed that there is no billboard in the DSCC area and they have started working to introduce Digital LED Billboard so that businesspeople can run their promotional activities legally.
