Landslide kills four in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar:  At least four people were killed and four other injured as landslides hit in Lighthouse area of Sadar municipality and Cheinda area of Ramu upazila in Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased are Lighthouse area’s Mohammad Shahed, 18 years old, and Saddam Hossain, in his twenties, and Sayma, around 5-year-old, and 7-year-old Jihan, children of Ziaur Rahman of Cheinda area at Mithaichhari upazila in Ramu.

The injured were taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Cox’s Bazar fire service deputy assistant director Abdul Melaq said landslide hit the area of Cheinda area at about 3:00am and left two children, Sayma and Jihan, dead while they were sleeping at their house. Their father Ziaur Rahman, and mother, Anarkali were also injured during the mudslide. They are admitted at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

In another landslide at Cox’s Bazar’s Lighthouse area two people were killed, and two others were injured. The injured—Delwar Hossain, and Arafat Hossain—were taken to the Sadar hospital.

Heavy rainfall has been continuing over Cox’s Bazar since 24 July afternoon.

Local met office recorded 208 millimetres of rain in Cox’s Bazar in last 24 hours. Landslides may occur at the district due to the heavy rainfall.
