Dhaka: Two suspected killers of ASP Mizanur Rahman were killed in a reported gunfight with detectives in Mirpur Beribandh area in the capital early Wednesday.

The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also recovered two pistols, two magazines, some sharp weapons and seized a private car from the spot.

The deceased were identified as Mintu, 45, and Zakir, 35.

"We assumed that the two deceased were reportedly involved in the killing of ASM Mizanur Rahman as their physical appearance matches the photographs of the suspected killers which were earlier received by DB police," said DB Joint Commissioner Abdul Baten.

Sub-inspector Momin of Rupnagar Police Station took the injured two suspected muggers to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 5 am, said SI Bachchu Mia, in charge of DMCH Police Camp.

Later, the duty doctor declared them dead, he added.

Contacted, Masudur Rahman, DMP deputy commissioner (Media), told UNB that based on the statement given by arrested killer Shah Alam, a special DB team took position near the bridge on Mirpur Beribadh under Rupnagar police station in the early hours of Wednesday.

At one stage, the DB team started following a white private car carrying four suspected muggers around 3:40 am.

When they reached near the office of Water Development Board on the Beribadh, they signaled the private car to stop, he said.

Suddenly the four suspects got down from the car and started firing targeting the law enforcers. The DB also fired back that injured two muggers and three policemen.

The two others suspects managed to flee the scene.

The injured muggers were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where they were pronounced dead around 5 am, said ADC Rasel of DB (West Division).

On July 22, detectives arrested Shah Alam from Tongi area in Gazipur city in connection with the ASP Mizanur Rahman murder.

During primary interrogation, Shah Alam said he along with his three associates -- Mintu, Kamal and Faruk -- took part in the killing.

ASP Mizanur Rahman of Dhaka Highway Police was found dead at Mirpur Beribandh (Embankment) area.

Mizanur, who joined the Bangladesh Police as a sub-inspector in 1988, set out from his Uttara residence after Fazr prayers for his workplace at Savar, police said.

Victim's younger brother Masum Parvez filed a case with Rupnagar Police Station against several unknown miscreants on the same day.
