‘Gunfights’ claim four lives in last night

Four people were killed in separate gunfights with police in Dhaka and Kushtia from Tuesday night till early hours of Wednesday. Two people were killed in a reported shootout at Rupnagar in capital’s Mirpur and two others were killed at Sadar upazila and Bheramara upazila of Kushtia.

NTV Online’s Dhaka Medical College correspondent says, two people were killed in a reported shootout with the member of Detective Branch (DB) of police at a field near the Water Development Board in capital’s Rupnagar area of Mirpur early on Wednesday.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s duty doctors declared them dead at about 7:00am.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. However, police claimed the deceased are around 40-45 years old and they were in lungis and shirts. The bodies were kept at the hospital morgue.

Police also claimed to have recovered a private car, two pistols and a piece of iron from the spot.

The Rupnagar police sub-inspector (SI) Mominur Rahman said two unidentified muggers were killed in the reported gunfight with detectives.

DB (West) Pallabi Zonal Team Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahadat Hossain said being tipped off that a gang of muggers on a private car are preparing to conduct crime at the field near Rupnagar’s Water Development Board, detective went to the spot. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, four suspected muggers opened fire to them. Police also fired back and two muggers received bullets during the gunfight. Two others managed to flee from the spot.

Police took the bullet-hit muggers to DMCH, where doctors declared them dead.

Our Kushtia correspondent said, two suspected robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Sadar and Bheramara upazilas in Kushtia on Tuesday night.

Police claimed the suspected robbers were killed in a gunfight at Baradi area of Sadar upazila and Doshmile area of Bheramara upazila. The law enforcers also recovered arms and bullets from the spot. They claimed seven law enforcing members were also injured during the shootout.

The Kushtia Model Police Officer-in-charge (OC-Operation) Obaiddullah said a team of police went to conduct an operation along with infamous robber Sobhan Ali on Tuesday midnight. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire as the police team reached Baradi’s Gorostanpara at Sadar upazila. Meanwhile, Sobhan Ali, who was arrested earlier, tried to escape. Police also fired back and Sobhan was dead after receiving a bullet.

Later, police recovered a pistol, a shuttergun, bullets and a machete from the spot.

Police claimed Sobhan, a resident of the village of Monohorpur at the Kumarkhali upazila, was accused in several criminal cases including robbery.

The Bheramara police Officer-in-charge (OC) Nur Hossain Khandaker said being tipped of about a robbery, police conducted raid in the Doshmile area of Bheramara upazila on Kushtia-Pabnna Highway. Sensing the presence of police the robbers opened fire to them. Police also fired back, which triggered a gunfight, and left a robber dead on the spot.

However, identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Police recovered a shutter gun, a bullet, and two sharp weapons from the spot. The body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
