Lakshmipur: A Lakshmipur court on Thursday convicted a man and his daughter-in-law and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a rape case.

The court also fined the convicts—Main Uddin, son of Delwar Hossain and his daughter-in-law Halima Begum, wife of

Nurul Islam of Shakerchar village in Sadar upazila, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.

Besides, the court asked the deputy collector to take necessary steps to bear the expenses of the rape victim and to identify the rape victim child as the child of the rapist and the victim.

According to the prosecution, the convict Main Uddin, with the help of Halima, violated a young girl for several times with a promise to marry her on 4 April, 2005.

When she got pregnant, the rapist refused to marry her. On 30 October, 2005, the victim filed a case against the duo under Women and Child Repression Prevention Act.

During the trial proceedings, the victim gave birth to a baby girl.

After hearing the records and 21 witnesses, Lakshmipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Saidur Rahman Gazi handed down the verdict.
