The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday stayed the trial proceedings against former caretaker government adviser Justice Fazlul Haque in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for accumulating wealth illegally.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order after granting the leave-to appeal petition filed by Justice Fazlul Haque, reports the UNB.

The court also asked Justice Fazlul Haque to file an appeal petition against the HC order that had asked to continue the trial proceedings against him.

Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali stood for the petitioner while Advocate Khurshid Alam represented the ACC.

Earlier, on March 15, an HC bench comprising Justice Md Shawkat Hossain and Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder cleared the way for continuing the trial proceedings against Justice Fazlul Haque in a case filed by ACC.

On April 13, 2008, the ACC filed a case with Ramna Police Station against Justice Fazlul Haque for accumulating wealth worth Tk 1.28 crore when he was serving as a caretaker government adviser.

On January 14 last, he filed a petition with the High Court seeking cancellation of the trial proceedings of the case against him.

Advocate Mansurul Haq Chowdhury stood for the petitioner while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the national anti-graft agency.
