Dhaka: The High Court on Monday asked the authorities concerned to submit the documents of a case filed against lawmaker MA Latif on charge of distorting Bangabandhu’s picture on billboards and festoons set up in Patenga and Bandar areas of Chittagong.

An HC bench of Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman passed the order following a revision petition filed by the plaintiff.

The court issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the order of a judicial magistrate dismissing the case should not be cancelled.

Advocate Ajoy Shonkor Bhoumik stood for the petitioner and Deputy Attorney General Harunur Rashid represented the state.

On January 30, 2016, former Jubo League leader Saifuddin Robi filed a Tk 10-billion defamation case with Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Farid Alam’s court against ruling party MP MA Latif on charge of distorting Bangabandhu’s picture on billboards and festoons.

Latif reportedly distorted the image of the Father of the Nation by superimposing it on his own body on billboards and festoons hung in Patenga and Bandar areas on the occasion of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to the port city.

The posture, attire, and shoes of the photo do not match the Father of the Nation’s ones, promoting some Bangladesh Chhatra League men to post the photo on Facebook, airing their doubt.

In the photo, they alleged, Bangabandhu’s face was tagged with the figure of Latif wearing Salwar and sneakers.

As the photo went viral on social media, ruling party men burst into protests demanding punishment of the MP for his audacity.
