Dhaka: Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim on Tuesday said Siddiqur Rahman, the college student whose eyes were damaged during a demonstration in the capital recently, would get a job in the Health Ministry after he returns to the country, reports BSS.

‘The government will help Siddiqur to get rehabilitated. I will give him a job in my ministry on his return to the country from India whether he gets back his eye sight or not,’ he said.

Nasim made the assurance while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Chikungunya: Dhaka Experience - 2017’ at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) seminar hall in city’s Shahbag.

‘We will try our level best so that he can get back his vision. If doctors suggest, Siddiq’s eyes will also be operated,’ he added.

Siddiqur, a third-year student of political science, was injured during a demonstration of the students of seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges at Shahbag last month.

As per the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Health Ministry has arranged his treatment at Chennai’s Sankara Nethralaya Hospital. The government is bearing the cost of his treatment. He was taken to Chennai on July 27.

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon, Director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, BSMMU Registrar Prof ABM Abdul Hannan and Prof Mohammed Atiqur Rahman also spoke, among others, with BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan in the chair.

The speakers said Chikungunya is not serious like other mosquito-borne diseases. After a particulate time, patients get recovery without receiving any special medical treatment.

Chikungunya infected patients should not be admitted to hospitals and even they do not need to go to hospitals for any test to diagnose the disease, they said.
