Habiganj: A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police on Baniachang-Shibpasha road in Anjan Bridge area under Baniachang upazila early Thursday.

Baniachang Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozzammel Haq said acting on a tip-off that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery at the house of Ismat Mia at Isabpur village, a team of police went to the spot around 3:15am.

Police arrested four suspected robbers - Saiful Islam Jhilik, Manu, Azam and Mantaz - from the spot.

Later, the law enforcers, along with the arrestees, conducted a drive in Anjan Bridge area around 4:00am to arrest other members of the gang.

At one stage, the robbers opened fire to police, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight.

Jhilik sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight while four policemen were injured in the incident.

Later, Jhilik was taken to local hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Jhilik was wanted in several cases, said police.

However, the rest of the arrestees remain in police custody.
