Dhaka: The death of a domestic help, who allegedly committed suicide in the city's Banasree area, sparked angry protest on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was Laily, 22, wife of Nagar Ali hailing from Phulbari upazila in Kurigram district. She used to work as a part-time domestic help at house-14/4 of Block-G, owned by a Moin Uddin, of the residential area.

Quoting the employer, sources at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said Laily came to the house in the morning. At one stage, she entered a room and locked the door from inside.

Getting no response from the room, the inmates called the manager of the building. Later, they stormed the room breaking open the door only to find her hanging.

Laily was taken to the DMCH where doctors declared her dead.

However, locals alleged that the domestic help was killed in a planned way.

They gathered in front of the employer's house around 4 pm and swooped on it, said sub-inspector Tofazzal, duty officer at Khilgaon Police Station.

The angry mob vandalised the house and torched a private car.

On information, police rushed in and tried to pacify the mob. However, the angry locals locked into a clash with the law enforcers when a chase and counter-chase took place between the both sides.

Later, police brought the situation under control firing several rubber bullets, the police officer said.
