AL turned repressive as its membership drive falls flat: BNP

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Wednesday alleged that Awami League having failed to get any response to its membership collection drive has waged a war to foil BNP's similar drive across the country through repressive acts.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also alleged that people have started showing Awami League 'red cards' for its misrule and misdeeds.

"A two-month long BNP's member collection and membership renewal drive is going on across the country. We're getting an overwhelming response from people to it. Awami League general secretary is making reckless comments about BNP as their ongoing similar programme turned unsuccessful," he said.

The BNP leader said the ruling party has let loose its 'armed cadres' to foil BNP's member collection inaugural programmes in different districts.

Apart from ruling party men's repressive acts, Rizvi said law enforcers are also obstructing BNP's programmes and arresting the party leaders and activists on false charges. "Even, they're again arresting BNP men on a large scale across the country in the name of a special drive."

He came down heavily on Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader for his comment that BNP men, not ruling party ones, are thwarting their programmes, Rizvi said it is a blatant lie. "Falsehood is now Awami League's only resort. They're misleading people spreading lies."
