Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed her happiness over the successfully surgery of Muktamoni at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The first surgical operation on 12-year-old Muktamoni was carried out successfully on Saturday at DMCH without amputating her right hand which is affected by an unknown disease since her early age.

‘The operation started at 9:00am and we successfully ended it at 11:00am,’ Dr Samanta Lal Sen, national coordinator at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of DMCH told BSS.

‘I have visited Muktamoni. She informed that she is now well. It is a great success for us that the operation has become successful without the amputation of her affected hand,’ he said.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina felt very happy after hearing the news of Muktamoni's successful surgical operation. The premier is inspiring the physicians for the girl's treatment, he added.

Dr Samanta Lal said it is not the last surgery on Muktamoni, she will need a series of surgical operations to get cured as there are a number of tumors in her vascular.

Director of Burn Unit Dr Abul Kalam Azad led the operation carried out after forming a 22-member medical board, he added.

Dr Abul Kalam Azad said at least four to five more operations are needed for Muktamoni as a number of tumors still remain in her vascular.

The next steps will be taken after monitoring Muktamoni's condition for four days, he said, adding that they have a plan of removing at least one tumor every week.

Fifteen surgeons of DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit and seven members of Anesthesiology Department, including Professor Sajjad Khandakar and Director of Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Dr Zulfiqar Lenin were present in the operation theatre.
