Dhaka: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday fixed October 16 for hearing the appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami top leader Maulana Abdus Sobhan challenging death penalty awarded to him by International Crimes Tribunal for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

The 3-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, fixed the date.

The apex court also asked both parties to file concise statement on appeal within two weeks.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state while Advocate SM Shajahan moved for Maulana Sobhan.

On February 22, 2015, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 condemned Jamaat-e-Islami senior most leader Sobhan to death for his crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the Liberation War in 1971.

Later on March 19, condemned war criminal Sobhan filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging his death penalty.

They attached 1,182 pages of documents with the appeal mentioning 92 grounds for seeking acquittal of the charges.
