BNP won’t quit: Faruque on polls
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will not boycott the ongoing municipality elections under any circumstances, said the BNP chairperson’s advisor Osman Faruque on Wednesday morning.
Osman Faruque told the journalists, at Election Commission office in capital’s Sher-e-Bangla at about 11:00am: ‘Observing the polling situation till now; we have seen that Awami League supporters captured more than 60 polling centres.’
‘The voters of those polling centres couldn’t exercise their franchises. The administrative authorities of those places also became helpless,’ said the BNP chief’s advisor.
Osman Faruque said, ‘We joined municipality election not for boycotting. BNP will never quit the elections. The beginning of the polls was not pleasant but we will see till the election ends.’
He also said, ‘The morning showed how the elections will be.’
Osman Faruque also said huge voter turnout has been noticed in those polling centres which are free from seizure.
He said a BNP delegation was supposed to stay in the Election Commission from morning to night, but in the morning election commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz was only seen in the election office.
A three-member BNP delegation team led by Osman Faruque visited the Election Commission at about 8:00am.
Other members of the team are DAB secretary general AZM Jahid Hossain, and lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder.
