Noted singer Abdul Jabbar dies at 80

Dhaka: Eminent singer Abdul Jabbar passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Wednesday morning. He was 80.

The noted singer breathed his last at 9:10am, said BSMMU public relations officer Proshanto Majumder.

Abdul Jabbar was admitted to BSMMU on August 1 with several health problems including irregularities at liver, kidney and heart.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed their deep shock at the death of veteran singer Abdul Jabbar.

The body of the patriotic singer will be taken to Central Shaheed Minar at 11:00 am on Thursday where people from all walks of life will pay their last tributes to him.

Later, his first namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University after Zohr prayers.

Jabbar inspired people through his songs from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Liberation War in 1971.

He was awarded Bangabandhu Padak (1973), Ekushey Padak (1980), Swadhinata Padak (1996) and different national and international awards.

Born in Kushtia, Jabbar first took music lessons from Ustad Osman Gani and Ustad Lutful Haque. He became an enlisted singer of radio in 1958 and television in 1964.
