Death toll from municipal election violence reaches 3
Dhaka: The number of deaths from municipal election violence has rose to three by deaths of two persons in Kishoreganj and Barguna.
In Kishoreganj, a person, Abul Kashem, in his fifties, was killed in a clash between the victorious and defeated mayoral candidates at Hossainpur municipality in the morning.
Several houses were vandalised and looted during the clash, complained the local people.
Deceased Abul Kashem was a resident of Maiparash of the municipality. He was a supporter of Awami League.
A person was arrested in this incident.
Hossainpur police officer-in-charge, Nannu Mia, said the two rival groups got into a deadly clash during election hours on Wednesday. Kashem’s injury was serious and he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
Supporters of the two groups also got into clash after hearing the news of Kashem’s death, the officer-in-charge said.
In Barguna, a person also succumbed to his injuries at Barguna. He was injured by stampede on Wednesday. He was under treatment at Barguna General Hospital. He was from village Dhupti at Gaurichanna Union under Sadar Upazila.
Earlier, on Wednesday, a person, Nurul Amin, was shot dead during a gunfight between two rival groups at Satkania in Chittagong.
